The disease of high blood pressure, hypertension, was reported to have a sustained rise in prevalence that is expected to affect nearly more than 1.5Bn individuals by the year 2025. Currently, hypertension affects 1 in 3 adults in the USA and is accused in 1 in 7 deaths as well. Many causes contributed to the rise in prevalence with a great attention was paid to mental stress including financial stress, anxiety, and depression. Moreover, stress resilience in the early life of the individual is strongly related to the risk of getting high blood pressure in the adulthood life.
The stress of the working conditions was proven to be associated with elevated blood pressure at night during sleep and work. It is well proved that heart muscle enlargement in patients with high blood pressure is more correlated to stressful situations than to blood pressure measured at home or in the clinic. This was suggested to be due to impaired neuronal nitrous oxide synthase, an enzyme responsible for easiness of mental stress, leading to activation of sympathetic activity and adrenaline release, a hormone responsible for stress changes in the body, and thus leading to heart and vessels events including high blood pressure; hypertension.
More is still. Psychosocial stress tests revealed that psychological stress contributes to a great extent to the elevation of bad cholesterol in the blood that is considered as a risk factor for high blood pressure. Many studies have been proved that the techniques or methods that have been used in reducing stress for 24 weeks show a positive impact on lowering the blood pressure including meditation. However, the positive effect of a specific technique in reducing the blood pressure is still in need for further research.
Fatigue is considered the most common symptom in clinical practice. The most prominent features are the decrease in capacity and loss of motives for work. Fatigue is also associated with increasing feelings of tiredness and need for sleep. It comes with many medical problems. Those patients with high blood pressure, hypertension, suffer from fatigue as a result of receiving no treatment and damage of the heart and vessels. Moreover, certain medications that are given to reduce blood pressure may cause fatigue including beta-adrenoreceptor blockers. Research worker found that patients with chronic fatigue, a rheumatological disease, suffer from less decrease of blood pressure on tilting.
Sexual function is one of the important aspects that are affected by high blood pressure. The ability to erect the penis is the most distressing complaint of male patients with hypertension. Moreover, the abnormal sexual function may be increased by the drugs used to treat hypertension including the beta-adrenoreceptor blocker (e.g. concor & metoprolol). On the other hand, it was suggested that angiotensin II receptor antagonists may be associated with improvement of erection and other male sexual functions.
In spite of the extensive research concerning male sexuality in patients suffering from high blood pressure and receiving medications to lower the blood pressure, the sexual damage in women remained unidentified. One recent study concluded that women with hypertension suffer from less lubrication of the vagina, decrease the times of orgasm, and more pain during intercourse. However, the emotions and feelings did not appear to be affected in patients with high systolic blood pressure.
